Don't make these mistakes
Step One: Learning English – What Should I Know?
What’s waiting for me? At first glance, learning English (or any language, really) might seem like an overwhelming, endless journey. And I won’t sugarcoat it—at times, it can feel like that. But here’s the truth: it doesn’t have to be. With the right mindset, it can be a fun, easy, and even enjoyable process.
The key is to start with the right approach. By keeping some simple principles in mind, you can avoid the tough paths that so many people take. Instead, begin on solid footing and follow a more enjoyable, effective route filled with activities like watching movies, surfing the internet, and doing all the things we already love—without the guilt! Learning English while doing these things turns what might feel like wasted time into one of the best investments you’ll ever make.
Learn a Skill, Not a School Subject
Many people approach learning English the same way they tackle subjects like physics, chemistry, or history. But here’s the twist: it’s nothing like that. Becoming fluent in English is more like sculpting the perfect body. It doesn’t happen overnight—if it did, we’d all be walking around with it.
There are no shortcuts, no magic tricks, and no unexpected breakthroughs. What you need is focus and consistency. First, you have to want it, truly want it. Then comes the work—dedicated practice, effort, and daily discipline. Think of learning English as a lifelong commitment, not just a temporary goal. Over time, it will become second nature.
As my idol, Arnold Schwarzenegger, once said, “I go to the gym for the same reason I eat breakfast every day.” Mastering English is no different—it becomes a part of your daily routine and your life.
Don’t Translate – It Holds You Back
One of the biggest obstacles to fluency is relying on translation. Translation limits how far you can go. It’s the reason people get stuck, unable to express themselves freely.
Think about how we learn song lyrics so easily, even without trying, while memorizing foreign vocabulary or formulas feels like pulling teeth. Why? Because we learn songs in chunks—first the chorus, then a catchy verse, and so on. The same principle applies to learning English: you need to immerse yourself in real-life language, not just isolated words or grammar rules.
Watch your favorite movies and TV shows. Pay attention to how native speakers talk in different situations—when they meet someone new, sit down for dinner, or interview for a job. Learn phrases and expressions by heart and start using them. The goal isn’t just to study English, but to acquire it naturally.
Embrace Mistakes – They’re Part of the Process
Remember when babies start learning to speak? Their mistakes are adorable (and often hilarious). No baby has ever mastered a language without countless blunders along the way. And let’s be real—we’re all still making mistakes!
Mistakes are part of the journey, so don’t let the fear of making them stop you. What matters is finding a good partner who will gently correct your errors—a teacher, friend, or mentor who’s fluent in English.
Ultimately, it’s not about being flawless; it’s about growing, improving, and enjoying the process every step of the way.
